Restored Glynns of Myrtles Plantation

The Glynns property is the northern most tract of the old Myrtles Plantation, built in 1796 to grow and ship cotton up and down the Mississippi River. Of course, the Myrtles is famed for its many tragedies and lingering souls.

The house also has it's own history, from LSU Sorority House, to boarding house, to halfway house - slated for demolition (to build government parking garages) in 1995, but saved and "moved" by "preservationist" Danny McGlynn in 1996. ("Moved" is in quotes because - truth be known - it is a misconception to think that you can pick up and move a 2 story house. In fact, much of the house was dropped at the front gates of Exxon Refinery on Scenic Highway, leading to traffic jams and live news coverage).

Anyhow, once arriving "on location" the house movers abandoned the half finished project, leaving its owner to slowly (and sometimes painfully) finish it by himself - adding a 3rd floor and various additions, as the project literally grew from the abundant quantity of 150-year- old timbers, windows, schoolhouse doors and bricks (ask him about this story!) harvested from the 125 year old Woodville High School just up the road. (The barn is almost completely constructed out of wood salvaged from the old High School and the pool house was built from the remnants of the burned-out Hardwood Lumber store, which once stood across Highway 61 from the front entrance).

Like the main house, the shotgun houses down in the valley, are from Baton Rouge - once sitting on Gracie Street, across the interstate from the State Capitol where they were built by Huey Long in the 1930's (where they originally served as low income housing). They were later moved to location by Danny in 1997 (using a different house mover, of course). Anyhow, after much pain, much money, and a few concerned bankers, (and after acquiring the nickname of "St. Franticville" - provided by Mama McGlynn), the house was finally "finished" and opened for "Christmas in the Country" in 1999 - an event in which the Glynn's proudly participates every year, as a continuing contribution to the community and to the St. Francisville Friends of the Library.

Now, after providing shelter to the many evacuees of Hurricane Katrina, "The Glynns" emerges as one of the areas' most prominent and versatile wedding and reception facilities - Elegant and friendly. - Refined and Rustic. - Affordable and Flexible. - And just plain perfect for almost any occasion. It is Southern Grace and Elegance at every turn!!!
